Skin Cleansing and Acne Prevention

Acne is quite common among teenagers because of the hormonal surge during puberty but when you are already past your teenage years and you still have acne, this is often blamed on poor hygiene. But is poor hygiene really the cause of adult acne? Let us set the facts straight and understand how acne if formed and discuss several ways on how to prevent this skin condition.

Why is Skin Cleansing Essential?

When you have acne, the first thing that you would need is a cleanser. Skin cleansing is very basic whether you have acne or not. It helps you get rid of the dirt and grime from your skin and at the same time prep your skin to receive all the nourishment of your skin treatment. With acne however, skin cleansing is often used as a preparatory step. It helps soften dead skin cells that clog your pores. It would be undesirable to apply an acne treatment without cleansing your face first.

Even though cleansing your skin is very important in treating acne, most often than not, it is not enough to completely treat your blemishes. Acne starts when dead skin cells cover your pores. This traps the oily substance inside your pores. These oily substances will then begin to harden making it even more difficult for the produced oil to reach the surface. Skin cleansers can help you loosed dead skin cells but because the hardened oil goes deeper than the surface of your skin, most of these cleansers are not enough to effectively free your pores from the hardened oil. If you want to completely get rid of acne, there are several steps that you need to follow and most often than not, you need more than just a cleanser to get good results.

Washing too often is also not advisable. Most people think that washing can help them get rid of the acne bacteria much faster. This is not true at all. As a matter of fact washing your skin more often than what is required can make you prone to acne attacks. This is primarily because of your body’s response to skin dryness. The more you wash, the more oil you strip from your skin. A little oil is required to keep your skin smooth and to protect your skin from dryness. When this thin coat of oil is depleted, it signals your body to produce more oil to replenish what is gone.
